Mariah Carey in Asia

Whereas Mariah's success in Europe was more or less limited to a small number of albums and a relatively time span, most notably the Music Box and Daydream era from 1993 to 1996, her appeal in Asia was much more enduring - a market, which is often overlooked nowadays, but has to be taken into consideration since it encompassed several thriving music markets in the 1990s and early 2000s, which have since then unfortunately mostly collapsed, resulting in rather negligible album markets nowadays.

 

In Asia, Mariah Carey's success was just as unlimited as her vocal range, reaching a total of more than 30 million albums sold throughout the continent:

 

Her most favorable and striking market was with no doubt Japan, where she is the best-selling foreign solo-artist of all time with cumulative album sales surpassing 18 million copies. Proof of her unrivaled status in the country is - just as one example -  the fact that  her first ever compilation album #1's sold more than 1 million copies in its first week of release  and has since become the best-selling international album ever in the country, beating even legendary recordings such as the Bodyguard Soundtrack or Michael Jackson's Thriller.

 

But Mariah's success transcended the borders of Japan: Especially further East Asian markets approved of her music output: As such, she managed to sell several million albums in countries like South Korea and Taiwan, too -  easily becoming the most successful female artist in those countries as well.

 

Aside from these markets, even South-Asian countries like Malaysia - although not quite as much as Japan -  showed some true love for Mariah, where her album #1's was one of the very few international releases to dominate the national album chart in the 90s - appearing on the list for more than half a year!
